It's A Good Day

Yesterday morning at breakfast one of my children asked God to ‘make this a good day.’ This a common prayer, isn’t it?  I’ve prayed this prayer before. I was prompted to ask the question this time however.

“What can God do to make this a ‘good day?’”

  • Maybe He could cause the sun to rise and warm the earth. (Oh, He’s already done that.)
  • Maybe He could wake us up from a night’s rest and provide food for us to eat. (Check!)
  • Maybe He could make people be nice to each other. (Ah, now we’re on to something!)

“Does God make us His puppets in order to make us be nice to each other?” (Imagine me on puppet strings…)  “No, He doesn’t do that.”

What God does do is love us with an overwhelming kind of love and live in our hearts by the power of His Holy Spirit. As God lives in and through us He makes this day GREAT through the choices we make.  Every day that we yield in obedience to Him, it’s a good day! When we are selfish and sinful, the people around us suffer. God is not glorified through us in those moments, and I would not call that a ‘good day.’

The Psalmist wrote, “This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). Rejoicing and being glad in this day brings glory to Christ. As we live for Him, it’s a good day!

Once again we see the remarkable truth that God involves us in this world to make it ‘a good day.’ So much of what He intends to accomplish to bless and encourage people is through us, His Church.  We get to participate in His Kingdom, which is strengthened and built through our discipleship! Our choices can bring Heaven to Earth!

Let’s be that kind of church.
